SECOND STAGE HOUSING

Trauma Recovery - Assistance and Recovery
Interrupting the cycle of domestic violence.

MIRAMICHI WOMEN AND CHILDREN AT RISK ARE RETURNING TO THEIR ABUSERS DUE TO THE LACK OF SAFE, AFFORDABLE HOUSING.

THIS IS A FACT.

These donations will be directly donated to the Second Stage housing project.

WHAT IS SECOND STAGE HOUSING?

Second Stage housing is a post-crisis living solution for women and their children who have fled their homes from domestic/intimate partner violence. This level of supportive housing offers a daily on site support coordinator, 24-hour security monitoring, and transitional programming. Residential and community programming services include education and awareness initiatives.

This is a well established program in the province of New Brunswick. In 1986, the first second stage program was developed in the province. There are now 8 sites throughout NB. Programming is funded by the Women's Equality Branch; current sites are located in Saint John, Moncton, Fredericton, Kent County, Shediac, Edmundston, Acadian Peninsula and Charlotte County. Gignoo Transition House provides second stage units in conjunction with Skigin-Elnoog Housing. Clients are able to access rent supplements through NB Housing/Social Development making second stage units affordable.

Support Services; examples:

  • Children's Support Programs

  • Emotional Support

  • Individual and Group Counselling

  • Assistance with goal setting and developing action plans

  • Advocacy

  • Life Skill Training: Examples include assertiveness, self-esteem, assistance with resumes and skills for healthy relationships

  • Assistance with access to required support services

Second stage housing provides a stable, secure environment with support for her that helps her plan and take action for the future.

Where does that leave the women and children under shelter at our house?

MIRAMICHI WOMEN AND CHILDREN AT RISK ARE RETURNING TO THEIR ABUSERS DUE TO THE LACK OF SAFE, AFFORDABLE HOUSING - something we see at the Miramichi Woman’s Shelter far too often.

OUR SECOND STAGE HOUSING PROJECT
A place of hope.

Currently, the Miramichi Transition House is in the process of finalizing acquisition of a building for our Second Stage project.

This second-stage project is an estimated 2.7 million dollar undertaking.

Once the building is acquired, renovation will commence at constructing an 8-unit complex; consisting of four 2-bedroom units, and four 1-bedroom units, programming space, soft-interview room (for clients to make their domestic violence statements to police) offices, teaching kitchen, and children’s indoor/outdoor trauma informed activity areas. It is important to the board that the appropriate accessibility measures and renovations are also included for residents.

Domestic Violence DOES NOT Discriminate

On a daily basis, at the Miramichi Emergency Center for Women we encounter and serve women and children in varying degrees of crisis. It is a true fact that domestic violence does not discriminate; our client demographics show this. No story goes unheard and we hope, in the spirit of heart of caring, the Community of the City of Miramichi join us in assisting so many of our clients and their children who are fleeing their home in search of safety for themselves and their children.
